We need to plant millions of trees in Austin and neighboring areas to address climate change, mitigate flood risks, and reverse biodiversity loss due to urban expansion. But where will we get the trees to do it? The native tree species that are adapted to thrive in our soils and climate are rare in the nursery trade today.

Collect Tree Seeds

  • Species list

    Step 1. What We Need

Click below to access the tree species that are currently in high demand. Please check back regularly, as these needs will evolve with the progress of the project.

  • Step 2. How To Collect Tree Seeds

Collect seeds at maturity, at the point of natural dispersal. Indicators that seeds are ready to harvest include:

    Seeds are full-sized and hard.

Seed coats are changing color – usually from green to a darker hue.

Some seed capsules (if present) are opening.

  • Step 3. Send The Seeds

Drop off or mail labeled tree seeds to TreeFolks at 10803 Platt Ln, Austin TX 78725 along with a Seed Collection Form OR iNaturalist observation number. There is a seed donation bin located next to the front door labeled “Place Seeds Here” at TreeFolks in which you can place seeds. Alternatively, large seed volumes can be picked up by TreeFolks staff or Central Texas Seed Savers Volunteers. Please email Central Texas Seed Savers to let us know your plan! Tree seeds loose viability quickly with age so don’t wait to send them, ask for help.

  • INaturalist Quick Start Guide

NOTE the OBSERVATION ID on the seeds when sending to TreeFolks.

OBSERVATION ID is the number at the end of the URL

  • Safe and Ethical Seed Collection

Collect no more than 10-20% of the available seed, avoid excessive depletion of any single plant.

Do not climb trees or damage other vegetation when collecting seed.

It IS legal to collect seed from Texas State and City of Austin road right of ways and public waterways. Pull off the road and park safely.

Ask private landowners for permission before collecting. Share information about our program with them!
